WHITTLESEA Council could face three different court hearings on pokies applications – and ratepayers will pick up the bill.
The Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation has listed hearings for pokies applications at the Bridge Inn Hotel in Mernda and the Royal Mail Hotel in Whittlesea.
Tattersalls, developer of the Laurimar Tavern, has lodged an appeal at the Victorian Supreme Court against a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal decision which rejected an application for pokies at the proposed tavern.
So far the application for pokies at the Laurimar Tavern has cost the council $28,000 at the VCGR hearing and $187,000 at VCAT.
It is unknown how much the three cases will cost Whittlesea ratepayers.
Whittlesea Council sustainability and planning acting manager Felicity Leahy said the council would make a submission on the Bridge Inn Hotel at the VCGR hearing.
The Bridge Inn Hotel case has already cost ratepayers $68,000 at a VCAT hearing in 2009.
VCGR acting commissioner Max Priestley estimated the Bridge Inn Hotel application would be listed in mid-June or the end of July.
The Royal Mail Hotel hearing was originally set for April 2010 but was adjourned indefinitely.
Funding for legal cases relating to gaming machines is allocated within the council’s Responsible Gaming budget.
A social and economic impact assessment is carried out before the council decides its stance.
