Parish praises construction of Epping North school

21 Nov, 2011 12:00 AM
CONSTRUCTION will begin on a new Catholic primary school in Epping North next year, expected to be open by 2013.

The new Mary of the Cross MacKillop Catholic Parish Primary School is expected to take about 120 students in its first year and grow to a peak of about 600. It will be the second primary school in the Epping North growth area.

But a nearby school has warned there is also a need for more government schools to meet growing demand.

The new school will be located on a 2.8 hectare site of the historic Creeds Farm on the corner of Redding Rise and Creeds Farm Lane, with parts of the homestead and out-buildings to be preserved and renovated to form the school. Enrolments for 2013 will open mid-2012.

Epping parish priest Maurie Cooney said the school was needed to accommodate growth in the area.

"We have parishioners who travel to St Peters in Epping who are living in Epping North and really looking forward to the school opening," he said.

Father Cooney said the school wanted to be an active member of the Epping North neighbourhood.

Epping Views Primary School has grown from 30 students when it opened in 2008 to 500 expected for 2012.

Epping Views principal Pauline Kubat said the new school could take some students but would only impact the small Catholic community.

"They certainly need to put some planning on the books for at least one more government school in this area," she said.

Ms Kubat said the school had already expanded into portable classrooms after being open three years.
